2019 Denton Black Film Festival

Join us the Denton Black Film Festival January 23-27, 2019 for great film, live music, comedy, spoken word, art exhibitions and more in Denton, Texas. Festival screenings and events take place throughout the city. Please see the schedule for specific venues. Visit for details. 

Among the highlights:

  • The 1959 classic Imitation of Life will be the opening film; additionally, we'll unveil a never-seen-before interview with actress Juanita Moore, who was nominated for Academy Award for her role in the film 
  • 60+ film screenings, including works that cover social justice issues like human trafficking and bias, hilarious comedies, pieces by female filmmakers and more
  • Grammy Award-winning jazz artist Kirk Whalum, with the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band, will close out the festival
  • Two comedy shows featuring Piper the Comedian and Hot Topic
  • A Spoken Word Open Mic/Poetry Slam Contest on Friday night
  • Two art exhibitions
  • All filmmaker panels/workshops are free, including our annual Creatives Resource Expo and our Women, Wine and Wisdom Panel
