Iris Bechtol: Carry
March 9 – April 8, 2018
Opening Reception: March 9, 7 – 9 pm
The Safe Room at The Texas Theatre
Iris Bechtol is a multi-media artist whose work utilizes a variety of processes including drawing, photography, and video. More recently she has been working with clay as sculpture material. Her work is an exploration of the world as a living field - something ongoing, unfolding, acting. Drawing on her examination of the phenomenological or “lived experience” Bechtol examines how its reflection through image, object, and place creates a narrative.
Currently working in small sculpture and works on paper, Bechtol is exploring the relationships between body and environment through abstracted forms. The objects in Carry are a reflection of the body as a field of experience, one that is as much psychological as it is physical. The objects reference weight and tension, and the discomfort they manifest in the body. The materials, paper, and clay are modest, and their inherent nature implies heaviness and an act of pulling. Ultimately, the process and resulting work for Carry is a way to release and unload the many burdens that might plague oneself.
Iris Bechtol is an artist, educator, and curator living in Oak Cliff - Dallas, TX. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Intermedia from the University of Texas at Arlington and is currently the Gallery Manager and an Adjunct Professor of Art at Eastfield College in Mesquite, TX. Bechtol's work has been included in exhibitions across Texas, Nashville, TN, New York, and San Diego, CA. She is founder and curator for TERRAIN Dallas (currently on hiatus), a temporary public exhibition space that focuses on exhibiting site-specific, temporary interventions by established and emerging artists in and around the conventional landscape of a suburban front yard.
