Uncle Calvin's Coffeehouse - Northpark Presbyterian Church

Folk Alliance International 2017 Artist of the Year nominee, folk/roots duo Ordinary Elephant, and 2014 Sammons Center for the Arts Jazz Musician of the Year Julie Bonk will share the stage at Uncle Calvin’s Coffeehouse on Friday, January 12th. 

Ordinary Elephant captivates listeners with their well-honed combination of insightful writing, effortless harmonies and intertwined clawhammer banjo and guitar. The collaboration of husband and wife, their connection, and their influences (such as Gillian Welch, Guy Clark, Anais Mitchell) all meet on stage. “As genuine as it gets” says Lloyd Maines. In 2017, Ordinary Elephant was both a Kerrville New Folk Finalist and Falcon Ridge Emerging Artist, and their release ‘Before I Go’ reached No. 7 on the Folk DJ Chart for the year. The road is home for this couple, who are creating and sharing the conversation of their music as they go.

Julie Bonk gives unique life and color to everything she plays. Her studies at Interlochen Arts Academy and UNT developed her love for Jazz, Blues, songwriting, and performing. Julie has performed and recorded with such notables as Bob Hope, Buggs Henderson, The Supremes, The Drifters, and The Platters. Currently living in Texas, Ms. Bonk is a well-respected and accomplished piano teacher in Jazz and Blues improvisation, composition, music theory, performance techniques and vocal styling. Her students have included Grammy Award Winner Norah Jones and Scott Hoying from the Pentatonics, Her latest release 'Different Shades of Blue' features songs closest to her heart, as well as her soulful originals.
