Lila Downs, the Grammy and Latin Grammy Award-winning singer, will be performing at the Winspear Opera House on March 7. Known for her powerful voice, Downs taps into indigenous Mexican influences, ranchera and South and North American folk, jazz, blues and hip-hop. Her music inspiration comes from her cultural background and the feeling of assimilation. Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, many of Downs’s lyrics reference social justice and highlighting border stories, including her 2001 album Border: La linea. Downs is no stranger to writing about food, and in her new album Al Chile she gives tribute to chile while exploring the relationship Mexicans have with the flaming fruit.
