Leap Day, that extra day that comes around every four years happens this week. You might not realize it yet, but Leap Day is special this year because it lands on a Saturday. And what makes it extra, EXTRA special is February 29th only falls on a Saturday once every 28 years–except when a year evenly divisible by 100, like 2100. That means the last time we saw Leap Day on a Saturday was in 1992. So get out and enjoy this extra Saturday of fun. Need another reason? Leap Day won’t happen again on a Saturday until 2048!

Everyone knows you can’t have a celebration without balloons. Well, how does 10,000 balloons sound? For a limited time, Rainbow Vomit, the immersive art installation is filled to the brim with balloons. Guests are invited to grab their cameras, families, and friends and explore the more the unique installation that includes more than 10,000 balloons, 9,000 LEDs, 300 pounds of cotton, and  5 miles of ribbon. The Balloon Takeover looks different every day with new balloon friends “popping up” through March 22. One more thing, if you have a latex allergy you might want to sit this one out.

If you’re wanting to take a real leap this Saturday head over to Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark for their second annual Epic Plunge. If you dare, you can take a “polar plunge” into the park’s 10,000 square-foot outdoor pool. Simple, right? Not so fast. The wave pool temperature is expected to be in the 40-50 degree range. Brrrrr!!!! All entrants will receive a long-sleeved “I Survived the Epic Plunge” t-shirt, hot chocolate, and all-day admission to Epic Waters.

Besides Leap Day, February 29 also happens to be the opening day for the Dallas Arboretum’s annual Dallas Blooms Floral Festival. This years’ theme is “Sounds of Spring.” Over 50,000 flowers and 100 varieties of bulbs will greet you as well as six huge music-themed topiaries. See a larger-than-life harp, bass, guitar and saxophone, and two topiary musicians–one playing the violin, the other playing the piano. Besides the floral extravaganza, the kiddos can peer into the reflecting pools (careful, don’t fall in), dodge the water jets at Toad Corner fountains, roll down the big hill near the concert stage, or just run around like banshees amongst the miles of green space.

Take a leap this Leap Day and learn something new. The Mozzarella Cheese Company has just the ticket with its Hands-On Cheesemaking Class for Kids and Parents. You and the kiddos ages 8 will learn to make fresh ricotta and how to stretch fresh mozzarella and form it into balls, bocconcini, mozzarella rolls, and Queso Oaxaca. You’ll finish the event off with a juice and cheese tasting “mocktail party.” Each participant gets a behind-the-scenes tour of the cheese factory, a neato Mozzarella Company apron, and cheeses that they made during the class to take home.

Another good opportunity to try something new happens on Sunday, the day AFTER Leap Day. That’s when you can introduce the kids to live orchestral music and ballet at Lewisville Lake Symphony’s and LakeCities Ballet’s performance of “Peter and the Wolf.” The classic story is told through dance and each character in the story is represented by an instrument in the orchestra. After the concert, kids can meet the dancers and try out instruments at a hands-on instrument petting zoo. Don’t worry about Junior being overwhelmed in a big, fancy opera house. The fun happens at the kid-friendly Herring Recreation Center in Lewisville.
