The most wonderful time of the year is winding down. But there’s still time to have a jolly holiday with some fabulous art events. The Art&Seek calendar is loaded with things to do with close to 1,000 events to choose from. Here are just a few you might want to consider.
Wednesday
Original works by award-winning author and illustrator Melissa Sweet are on view at the Irving Arts Center. Sweet’s whimsical pictures combine watercolor, mixed media and collage and often incorporate text and found objects into the design. You can see her exhibition ‘Some Illustrator’ through Jan. 26
The Palace Arts Center in Grapevine screens the 1983 holiday classic, ‘A Christmas Story.’ The movie follows a young boy named Ralphie as he tries to convince his parents, his teacher and Santa that a Red Ryder BB gun would be the perfect Christmas present.
Join in the fun with a game of Loteria at the Latino Cultural Center. There will be prizes for the winners and light food and drink will be provided.
Thursday
Head to the Medical City Lewisville Grand Theater for Christmas with the Lewisville Civic Chorale. The concert includes old and new holiday favorites, an audience singalong, and admission is free for kids under 18.
It’s the 3rd Thursday of the month and that means it’s time for Dragon Street Galleries Art Walk. Take a stroll and check out the businesses and galleries between Oaklawn and Payne Streets. The causal walk is free and happens tonight from 5 to 8 p.m.
Theatre Arlington holds the Pinnacle Bank Cabaret Series. Tonight’s show features B.J. Cleveland and his acclaimed one-man show.
Friday
Time is running out to see ‘Black Nativity by Langston Hughes’ at Bishop Arts Theatre Center. The show tells the story of the Nativity through gospel music and the poetry of Langston Hughes. See the Oak Cliff tradition through Sunday.
In Arlington, River Legacy Living Science Center hosts the traveling exhibit ‘The Nature of Things” featuring “Bee-lieve It or Not! The Secret Lives of Honey Bees.” Find out why pollinators are so important through this interactive show.
Check out Granbury Theatre Company’s production of “The Lion, The Witch, and Wardrobe.” The dramatization of the C.S. Lewis classic is onstage at the historic Granbury Opera House through Dec. 22.
Saturday/Sunday
Head to the Riverside Arts District in Fort Worth on Saturday for Acoustic Solstice. The free event features acoustic music from multiple local bans like Gollay and Matt Tedder, as well as an arts and holiday market.
“If Scrooge Was a Brother” closes at Jubilee Theatre in Fort Worth this weekend. Don’t must this urban spin of “A Christmas Carol” where all the ghosts and characters are icons of Black culture.
This weekend is also your last chance to see “Dot” by Colman Domingo at the South Dallas Cultural Center. The bittersweet comedy follows a woman who is struggling with Alzheimer’s while her three grown children navigate the holiday season.
The Allen Civic Ballet presents its annual production of “The Nutcracker” at the Allen High School Performing Arts Center. The show features live musical accompaniment by the Allen Philharmonic Orchestra.
Monday
Has Jack Frost been nipping at your nose? That’s probably Jack getting your attention to let you know that “Jack Frost” closes this weekend at Casa Mañana in Fort Worth. The show is narrated by that jolly old elf himself, Santa Claus. In this icy adventure, Jack and his group of friends try to save the Frozen Kingdom from Jack’s evil uncle.
The holiday tradition that is Joe Dickinson’s “Ebenezer Scrooge: A Musical Adaptation” is still going strong in Dallas. The show is an adaptation of the holiday classic about the miserly Scrooge who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. This is the 37th year for this popular production at Pocket Sandwich Theatre.
The award-winning acapella group Pentatonix wraps up their 2019 Christmas tour in their hometown. See A Pentatonix Christmas at The Theatre at Grand Prairie.
Tuesday
Philadelphia-based photographer and artist Ed Wheeler dresses up as Santa Clause and inserts himself into classic paintings for his show Ed Wheeler: Santa Classics. You can see the humorous exhibition at the Irving Arts Center.
Head to the Plaza at Preston Center in Dallas for SnowDay. The immersive experience is inspired by the spirit of the holidays and features an imaginative wonderland of festive photo ops, enchanted rooms, interactive spaces and more.
Catch the 42nd annual TubaChristmas!. The free holiday concert featuring over 200 tubas and euphoniums starts at noon at Thanksgiving Square in Dallas.
Today is the last day for Holiday Bricktacular! at Legoland Discovery Center in Grapevine. Kids can write letters to Santa, create their own holiday masterpieces, and see a LEGO replica of DFW transformed into a winter wonderland.
