Even without all the satellite operations circling around town — at Dallas Contemporary, the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Belmont Hotel, the Goss-Michael Foundation and on and on — the Dallas Art Fair (that is, just what’s going on this weekend at the Fashion Industry Gallery on Ross Avenue) is noticeably bigger and richer this year, richer as in more dealers, more stuff, more big names.
A couple of Vernon Fishers, Chuck Close’s big porraits, some of Damien Hirst’s butterflies, you seen them in museum catalogs. But there are plenty of cool discoveries, too.
Like, say, a repeat appearance of Chris Sauter’s The Whole World, the best thing in last year’s Wish You Were Here show at Fort Worth Contemporary Arts (tbat’s the wallboard-microscope in the slideshow above). Or in Kristy Stubbs Gallery, you might spot one of Polly Morgan’s lovingly macabre, taxidermied birds, while Marfa’s Galleri Urbane features Misako Inaoko’s recombinant-DNA, toy animal sculptures — a whole chess-set full.
There’s also Dallas photographer David Gibson’s breathless puff of smoke and an entire gallery’s worth of William John Kennedy’s recently rediscovered photos of Andy Warhol from the early ’60s (one is included in the slideshow above). And you can catch a pair of Hung Lui’s beautiful ‘bastard’ paintings here.
