IN THE ARMY: Siobhan Fallon writes about what she knows. She’s married to a soldier on his third tour of duty in the Middle East, and so her new short-story collection, You Know When the Men are Gone, focuses on soldiers coming and going from Fort Hood and the pain that those comings and goings can cause. Janet Maslin says, “there’s not a loser in the bunch” in her review of the eight-story collection in The New York Times. “Ms. Fallon’s emphasis is not on the negative. It’s just that life is tough at Fort Hood. Fears tend to be justified,” she writes.
