The reincarnation of a car garage into an artist’s studio is a romantic American tradition. Think Garage Band, the software (or the real deal).

Our newest contributor to Artist Studio Tour is sculptor and collagist James Michael Starr, whose work has shown all over the United States, as well as Paris and New Zealand. He is represented in North Texas by Conduit Gallery.

Lest you believe all garage studios are alike, compare, if you will, to Andrew Tolentino’s converted studio in the picture just below Starr’s.

Meanwhile, I’ve just posted a video tour of artist and art conservator Brad Ford Smith’s East Dallas work space.

And where do you get creative? Send a shot of your studio – whatever that may be – to [email protected].

  • Unfortunately, I don’t think the apartment community would look favorably upon the renovations I have in mind for my little detached garage/studio-haven. Whenever I can free myself from the shackles of renting and deposits, I’ll be sure to give James Michael Starr a call for his blueprint. This space looks awesome!

Thanks again for inviting us in and showing us around!

  • Betsy,
Thanks for doing such a great job of editing on my Artist Studio video. It is usually very painful to watch myself on film, but this video makes me laugh.

I would like to clarify that the sketch book in the video is not simply 4 years old. The pages in the sketch book have been worked and reworked over the last 4 years. This is a common work method for me. You can see some of these pages on the Flickr link that Betsy was so nice to post.

I think Cooper should get two paws up for his impromptu cameo.

thanks again Betsy. I can’t wait to see who you visit next week.
    Brad
