Artist Brad Ford Smith was preparing for an opening at Mighty Fine Arts when I visited his studio to shoot the video above. Rather than a grouping of several works, Brad did a single installation using “a stack of old watercolor paper, a pair of scissors, a hole punch, a color copier, some nails, a bit of string, and a nine-foot-long wall.” Low-tech materials for this day and age, but the result – revealed last weekend at the opening of Just Below The Skin A River Flows – is pretty amazing. While the gallery light was not cooperating with my attempts to capture the finished work in a photograph, you can catch a wee glimpse of detail through the one shot that did turn out (below). You must see the whole thing for yourself.

Just Below The Skin A River Flows runs through March 22 in the Project Room at Mighty Fine Arts in conjunction with the main gallery show for Luke Sides and Anne Allen. And while you’re there, don’t forget to peruse the back gallery of artwork for sale, including pieces by Kana Harada and Brian Jones.

  • Thanks Betsy for doing such a great job putting this video together. It is very rare that I can stand to watch two seconds of myself on film, but your editing resulted in a video that made me laugh. I think Cooper enjoyed it, too.

  • Good job, Betsy cool video. Brad, enjoyed seeing your studio
and your wonderful work. Your installation at Mighty Fine
is the best use of the leftover dots from a hole punch- EVER.

Takes the theory of the “red dot” to a whole new level.
Loved the chance to sneak around Brad’s studio.
      Loved Cooper’s guest shot.
Thanks for a charming and sometimes giggling view of an artist’s studio.

Way to go Brad! Congrats on making the awesome video! Very proud of your work. Move over Vik Muniz – The Dot Master is here! P.S. Cooper is super photogenic. Cheers!

Brad, your gentle arty quirkiness shone through nicely in Betsy’s video. Your sketch books are treasures. And Mister DeMille, I think Cooper is ready for the cat chow commercial close-up!

What a gem! Love the world seeing the side of you we know, Brad. Congratulations on your ever-expanding body of stellar work. I feel honored to have been in the presence of sketchbook filling from time to time.
