Van Cliburn’s 1958 victory in the first International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition was a legendary Cold War moment. Only 23 years old, Cliburn was thrust into the spotlight as a musician, but also as an emblem of the cultural competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. This presentation explains how both government and private efforts helped get Cliburn to Moscow and the stakes of his performance on the world stage.
