Further Sounds comes back with the last instalment of the year to celebrate those explorers that wander beyond the edges of melody. Dallas music scene has strong ties to the rest of Texas and the US experimental scenes. We’ve invited some national talent to showcase what’s going on in the outskirts of sound. BEN BENNETT+MICHAEL FOSTER
(Philadelphia/Brooklyn)
Foster and Bennett straddle a lot of lines…they can handily deliver Coltrane-esque sax & drums blowing and then on a dime turn to intimate extended technique workouts. Both exude an intense stage presence that blurs the line between music & performance art, blurs the line between what sounds the saxophone and drums make and more.
Foster and Bennett represent an interesting juncture in the history of music – a younger generation pushing the accomplishments of those previous, forward. A hybrid music which draws on a blending of many pasts, to present a vision for possible futures. Theirs is a music of deep emotion, interplay, and call and resonance – formed by brilliant technique and a carefully honed ear. As great improvisation always is, these are sounds defined their silences as much as the note and beat, where listening has a greater role than what is played.
CHRISTINA CARTER
(Austin)
Christina Carter was born in the bayou city of Houston, Texas in November of 1968, and co-founded the group Charalambides there in December of 1991. Ever since then, she has deeply mined her own vein of sound-as-music with voice, guitar (both electric and acoustic), piano, and keys. For the past several years, Christina has utilized extended improvisational guitar passages within and without song-medley structures; re-contextualized certain Charalambides songs within the spare single guitar/voice form that birthed much of the group’s music; and recently, investigated ‘the song’ as a thing unto itself, specifically concentrating on ‘the word’- both in her own lyric writing and her interpretions of the work of other lyricists.
In addition to performing extensively in the US, UK and Europe as a solo artist, Christina has played and recorded in various groups and duos with Black Forest/Black Sea, Maria Chavez (as Weird Cookie), Loren Connors, Chris Corsano, Dredd Foole, Sandy Ewen, Paul Flaherty, Gown (as The Bastard Wing), Shawn David McMillen, and Thurston Moore.
Concurrent with her work as a musician, Christina has expanded her involvement in writing and visual art. Her poetry has been published by Digitalis Industries, The Ecstatic Peace Poetry Journal, Glass Eye, and Slow Toe Press. In 2007, her art piece Forever 21 appeared at Salon Mijangos in San Antonio, Texas as part of a concert/exhibit featuring Tom Carter, Warmer Milks, and Tetuzi Akiyama.
VIRGINITY
(Austin)
Composition pierced through with improvisation, choreography, poetry, tape work and engaging artifacts of nature in the context of ritual-tinged performance.
Parham Daghighi is an improviser/multi-instrumentalist whose recent foci include electric guitar, tape manipulation, percussion, violin and dozaleh. He is a core member of Texas-based explorative music groups SSBT and Friendship Cemetery. Recent recordings include 247 Main by SSBT on Astral Spirits and Friendship Cemetery’s self-titled split cassette with Baby Blood on Self Sabotage Records.
Spencer Dobbs is a musician and poet who issues recordings and chapbooks on his Anahuac Editions imprint.
