After experiencing the death of her parents and brother in quick succession, Isabelle Eberhardt, a native of Switzerland, travelled alone to Algeria. Against societal norms, Eberhardt dressed as a man, joined the Algerian army, married an Algerian soldier, converted to Islam and was initiated into Qadiriyya, a Sufi order. Singers and instrumentalists tell Eberhardt’s story from the remaining fragments of her writing, with newly commissioned staging, choreography and immersive projections. This innovative restaging of American composer Missy Mazzoli’s opera in one act, Song from the Uproar will be an intimate and thought-provoking contemporary performance that addresses themes of gender identity and mental health.
