Dallas Center for the Performing Arts
The Dallas Center for the Performing Arts, a new multi-venue performing arts center for music, opera, theatre and dance, will open in downtown Dallas in October 2009. The most significant new performing arts complex to be built since New York City's Lincoln Center, the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts will provide new state-of-the-art performance spaces for The Dallas Opera, Dallas Theater Center, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Texas Ballet Theater, Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico and other Dallas-area performing arts organizations. The Center will also produce original programming and present top music, opera, dance and theatre companies from around the world. The Dallas Center for the Performing Arts will include four new venues and a public park:
- Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House and the Margaret McDermott Performance Hall - a 2,200-seat venue (with flexible capacity up to 2,300), designed by Foster + Partners, for performances of opera, ballet, Broadway and premier touring productions.
- Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre - a flexible 600-seat theatre for classical and experimental performances, designed by REX/OMA, Joshua Prince-Ramus (partner in charge) and Rem Koolhaas.
- Annette Strauss Artist Square - a new home for the city's premier outdoor performing arts venue, designed by Foster + Partners, as a serene, open-air setting that accommodates up to 5,000 people.
- City Performance Hall - a main stage production space for Dallas' smaller performing arts organizations, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and constructed by the City of Dallas.
- Performance Park - a 10-acre public park, designed by Michel Desvigne, that will unify the four other venues and create a dynamic cultural destination in downtown Dallas.
