Sigma Alpha Iota - Denton Alumnae Chapter

The Denton Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota was chartered on December 5, 1959. Charter members were:
Ann Barnett, Evelyn Cuthbert,* Jan Ebersole, Matilde Gardner,* Ruth Gibson,* Winette Hargrove, Marilyn Haynie, Anna Harriet Heyer,* Barbara Kelton, Lee McCray,* Marilyn McKinley,* Jean Mainous,* Patricia Morey, Velma Selby,* and Shirley Sheets.

The Denton Alumnae Chapter has always sought to work closely with the two local university chapters - Iota Theta (University of North Texas) and Iota Omega (Texas Woman’s University). The Alumnae Chapter offers help to them with scholarships, recruitment events and joint musicales.

Since 1961, our chapter has hosted an annual Benefit Musicale, the proceeds of which support two $600 yearly scholarships - one for a member of Iota Theta and another for a member of Iota Omega. Past performers include Joan Wall, Mary Nan Mailman*, UNT Faculty Woodwind Quintet, Mike Steinel Quintet, Pamela Youngblood’s TWU/Brookhaven Flute Choirs, Dr. Richard Shuster, Dr. Mary Karen Clardy, the Steve Harlos Quartet, Dr. Susan Dubois, Stephen Morscheck, and the Denton Community Band conducted by chapter member Carol Lynn Mizell. Our chapter also awards two $1,000 scholarships named for the late Isabel Scionti - a world-class pianist, passionate instructor and dedicated sister. These scholarships are awarded to a pianist at UNT and TWU based on a competitive audition process.
