University of Texas at Arlington - Department of Theatre Arts
The University of Texas at Arlington’s Department of Theatre Arts is a leader in undergraduate theatre arts and dance training in North Texas. The mission of the Department of Theatre Arts is to provide comprehensive undergraduate education through theory, practice, and research.
UTA offers a diverse Theatre Arts degree program, offering BFAs in Design and Technology, Musical Theatre, and Performance as well as a BA in Theatre Arts. Minors in Dance and Theatre Arts are also available. Students are challenged to develop their talent, self-discipline, and initiative through both intellectual and creative pursuits. Theatrical production work goes hand-in-hand with classes designed to immerse students in the theatrical production process as well as dramatic literature, theatre history, and playwriting.
The Department of Theatre Arts produces the popular and diverse Maverick Theatre Company season of plays and musicals, in addition to the focused development of new theatrical works. In addition, Maverick Dance Company presents innovative dance concerts throughout the year.
Nestled in the middle of Texas’ DFW Metroplex, students have access to over 125 theatres from Fort Worth to Dallas and elsewhere in North Texas. The nationally and internationally-recognized faculty and staff of artists and scholars have created an environment where students receive personalized mentorship.
Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of production styles and a remarkable mix of theatre and dance productions in three spaces including the Maverick Theatre Company Mainstage, The Studio Theatre, and The Lab Theatre.
Not only do students receive an excellent academic foundation in theatre at UTA, they also have numerous production and performance opportunities including: MavPlays written by playwrights-in-residence and guest artists; The Lab Theatre where students and faculty work within a laboratory theatre setting; Flight 12 Improv Group; Broadway Mavericks, the department’s auditioned singing and performing ensemble; and the Emotional Robotics Living Lab dedicated to the research of theatre and social robots. In addition, the Department of Theatre Arts at UTA offers a number of interdisciplinary courses in areas such as Gender Studies, Social Robotics, and Disability Studies.
