The corner
stone of the Terrell Carnegie Library Building was laid in September of 1903
and the building was opened to the public as the Carnegie Library on March 15,
1904 serving Terrell in this capacity until the middle 1980's. Of the thirty
Carnegie Library buildings built in Texas, we are fortunate that Terrell's is
one of the twelve of these structures still standing. The building is a
Registered Texas Historic Landmark, a Texas Archeological Landmark and is on
the National Register of Historic Places being the only building in Kaufman
County holding all three of these designations. It is now the home of the Terrell Heritage Museum.
