Soul Rep Theatre Company
Soul Rep Theatre Company is a “homegrown company” founded in 1996 by Dallas/Fort Worth natives Guinea Bennett-Price(Co-Artistic Director) and Anyika McMillan-Herod(Managing Director) and Tonya Davis-Holloway (Co-Artistic Director). They are products of Dallas ISD’s Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and the dynamic undergraduate HBCU Theater programs of Howard University and Prairie View A&M University.
From 1995 to 2003, Soul Rep blossomed from a small community theater into Dallas’ celebrated professional theater company dedicated to the African American experience. For many years, Soul Rep produced a season of plays that included three main stage productions, in addition to an Annual New Play Festival and Cafe/Negro Arts Series, a collaboration with Cara Mia Theater Company. Several productions received critical acclaim. At the time, Soul Rep was the only African American company in the southwest to produce a new play festival that showcased works by emerging and established playwrights across Texas and the southwest. Additionally, the company established a quality Arts education program for children, youth, and adults, offering workshops, master classes and summer programs.
After a ten-year hiatus, Soul Rep marked its comeback in the fall of 2013. For the last four years, the company has provided a robust offering of productions and arts education, much of it based at the South Dallas Cultural Center, where Soul Rep is now the resident theater company! In its first run, Soul Rep reaped respect and achieved tremendous results as a professional theater company. Soul Rep successfully filled a void in North Texas and consistently provided quality, thought-provoking and entertaining new work, classic and even classical plays. The company is excited to be back and active in the hearty and exciting Dallas theater community.
