Saptavarna

Granville Arts Center

Saptavarna or Seven Shades of Dance incorporates 20 accomplished dancers from India and the US. The presentation includes The Gita: The Journey of Life, amongst other performances. In a day and age when we are battling with our own existential crises, the Bhagavad Gita brings us age-old, yet, timeless lessons simplified through the words of Krishna as a thought.

To bring Saptavarna to life, Padmashri Aruna Mohanty from Bhubaneswar (Odissi by Orissa Dance Academy), Gauri Diwakar from New Delhi (Kathak), Anita Guha, from Chennai (Bharatnatyam & Kuchipudi), Janardhan Raj Urs from Bengaluru (Contemporary), Pallavi Krishnan from Chennai (Mohiniattam) and Anjika, from Kolkata (Manipuri), collaborated and created this production

This production has a pan-Indian, multicultural, multilingual approach, and an amalgam of different genres of music, costumes, lights and set design, which serve as a sensory delight - transcending the audience to a different realm. The performance attempts to bring to life some abstract ideas and concepts discussed in the Gita through stories from mythology, history and everyday experiences. The audience will be drawn to the concept of the Gita come alive through the story of Gandhi, Geetagovinda, Ramayana & Mahabharata.
