Kristen Cochran - Chroma Soma: Photographs & Sculpture

Barry Whistler Gallery

Barry Whistler Gallery is pleased to present the work of Kristen Cochran. The opening reception for her exhibition Chroma Soma: Photographs & Sculpture will take place on Saturday, September 14th from 6-8 pm. Exhibition on display through October 12.

Born in the Pacific Northwest, Kristen Cochran is an interdisciplinary artist now living and working in Dallas, Texas. Cochran moved to Texas to complete her M.F.A at the Meadows School of Arts at Southern Methodist University in 2010. Since completing her degree, Cochran has taught at both universities and museums in DFW, including The University of Texas, Dallas, Texas Christian University, The Nasher Sculpture Center, and the Modern Art Museum Fort Worth.

Cochran’s recent work explores the pleasures, absurdities, and banalities of labor and the symbolic implications of human laboring be it physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual. Her transdisciplinary work shape-shifts in the forms of sculpture, prints, video, and installation. It is often comprised of quotidian materials such as bread, clay, clothing, shirt pockets, and copper plumbing—materials used as they relate to the gestures, needs, and aspirations of human beings at work. The work often weaves together social tapestries constructed from the seams of deconstructed or flayed work gear.

Kirsten Cochran has exhibited her work locally, nationally, and internationally. She has been awarded residencies in Long Island City, NY; Mittersill, Austria; Banner, Wyoming and recently completed a year-long residency at The Center for Arts and Medicine at Baylor Hospital’s Sammons Center for Cancer Research.

Recent exhibitions include Fold In at Lawndale Arts Center in Houston, Material Intension at ex ovo projects, The LINE at Site 131 and Architectures of Aspiration (r.i.p.) at Liliana Bloch Gallery in Dallas, Texas. Most recently, Cochran opened a solo exhibition entitled, “GOALS” at the Wright State University’s Robert and Elaine Stein Galleries, which will be on display from August 28 to October 6, 2019.
