US/THEM is inspired by the Beslan School Siege in 2004, when armed Chechen rebels stormed a school in Russia, taking hostage over 1,100 students, parents, and teachers. It ended three days later with 700 people injured and 334 people dead; 186 of them children.
Us/Them is a haunting, surprising, always captivating account of the siege as told by two young hostage students.
It offers a child's understanding of coping with trauma and why people commit unthinkable acts.
