Egg Tempera Workshop with Julio Reyes and Candice Bohannon

This introductory egg tempera workshop is designed for artists who would like to venture out into the world of egg tempera and understand this medium employed by old masters. Students will have the opportunity to learn from two of the most respected, internationally award-winning painters known for their figurative works in both egg tempera and oil: Julio Reyes and Candice Bohannon.

Enthused to be able to offer this first egg tempera workshop, both Julio and Candice will be providing demonstrations each day, as well as individual instruction and critiques while sharing their knowledge of egg tempera and painting techniques. They will teach you how to mix egg tempera paint from scratch, guide you through their method of creating egg tempera portrait paintings and lay the foundation for creating visually strong paintings.

Additionally, all egg tempera supplies, canvases and brushes will be provided in this workshop. Working from photographs provided by Julio and Candice, students will learn: how to prepare an ideal modern surface from aluminum composite panel transfer a drawing and create an ink wash underpainting build color and light through multiple layers achieve realistic flesh tones and soft transitions deal with edges and make corrections learn how to expand the value range, and techniques for finishing.

JULIO REYES earned a BFA in Painting and Drawing with a minor in Sculpture from Laguna College of Art and Design. After graduation, he married his art school sweetheart and dove headfirst into a life of art-making. Through skillful craft and exquisite handling, Julio shares his unique and passionate vision in painting, drawing and sculpture. His work often depicts intimate dramas; brief moments of unnoticed grandeur, and tender souls grappling with the pressures of modern life. Winning top awards, "Best in Show" 2010-ARC Annual Salon Competition – The Art Renewal Center’s and the 2012 prestigious William F. Draper Grand Prize at the International Portrait Society of America, Julio is one of only two artists winning the highest honor at both major American art Competitions. Represented by Arcadia Gallery, New York/Los Angeles, in 2011, Julio had his debut solo exhibition in New York. Throughout his career, Julio has been featured in dozens of books and magazines, exhibited in multiple countries and museums, is collected all over the world. Recently relocated to Fort Worth, Texas with artist and wife Candice Bohannon, they welcomed their first child.

CANDICE BOHANNON received her BFA with honors from Laguna College of Art and Design (2005). Bohannon’s artwork consists of deeply compassionate, penetrating and emotive figurative pieces along with intensely studied works from life and nature. Her work is contemplative, expressing a sincere philosophical pursuit of truth and meaning, and an exploration of the robust human spirit. Exhibiting in some of the finest museum shows, Candice's work has received numerous honors: 2nd place in the Art Renewal Center (ARC) figurative category in 2016, Fine Art Connoisseur’s Award of Excellence in ARC's 2013 competition and 1st Place in The Artist’s Magazine Annual Art Competition in 2012. Additionally, she received a Certificate of Excellence from the Portrait Society of America in 2012. Candice work has been published in numerous art books and major publications such as Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector, Southwest Art, The Artist’s Magazine, International Artist, Professional Artist Magazine, and ArtSee. Candice is currently represented by The Principle Gallery, Alexandria, VA. She currently resides in Texas and shares her life with her husband and fellow artist, Julio Reyes.
