Art Room presents the group exhibition Perceptive Sentiment, featuring the work of local, regional, and national artists Alejandro Borges, Bruce Breaux, Joey Brock, Andy Brown, Stephanie Lanter, Todd McDonald, Mihee Nahm, and Haylee Ryan. The show runs from August 15 to September 28, 2019.
Perceptive Sentiment was curated by Art Room Co-Founders, Executive Director Nathan Madrid and Chief Advisor Katie Murray. Madrid and Murray write, “These artists are challenging the perception of realism either by redefining the standards or distorting it completely. In the philosophy of mind, perceptual realism, also characterized as common sense, is the idea that the senses provide us with direct awareness of objects as they really are. Objects obey the laws of physics and retain all their properties whether or not there is anyone to observe them. However, Realism as an art movement can mean different things to different people and has changed meaning over time, which makes it difficult to define. Art gives the maker the ability to defy those common laws and expectations by creating new worlds through various media. Together, this group of artists brings elements of representation to the Abstract Expressionist aesthetic.”
The exhibition illustrates the shift in the art movement of Realism through the ever-evolving stylistic differentiation that occurs within the approach to representative art-making. Perceptive Sentiment exhibits not only a variety of media but a range of ways in which each artist observes the reality in which he/she creates—whether that be through direct or perceived realism.
Art Room is open to the public and will host an opening reception for Perceptive Sentiment on August 15, 2019.
