Once again, tradition and innovation meet up in Old East Dallas. This time it is a benefit performance by student violinists from Zaragoza Elementary School’s Ubuntu Music Project at Sons of Hermann Hall in Deep Ellum on Aug. 15 at 7 p.m.
Talented young musicians will perform alongside some of the area’s finest string players during the free event. Donations are encouraged.
The Ubuntu Music Project is an after-school program at Zaragoza Elementary in Peak’s Addition providing daily violin instruction and academic tutoring. This year, 100 percent of Zaragoza’s Ubuntu program students who have auditioned for coveted placement in Greiner Magnet Arts Middle School and Talented and Gifted Academies have been accepted.
The benefit concert will launch Ubuntu Music Project's work to expand its academic tutoring program through a partnership with One+One Dallas, a collaborative initiative that provides academic support for students at DISD schools.
Admission is free. Donations are encouraged.
The event is co-sponsored by Dallas PorchFest, a non-profit organization in Peak’s Addition, Old East Dallas, that sponsors a community music event to raise money for neighborhood improvement. This year’s PorchFest is set for Oct. 5. www.dallasporchfest.org.
