Songs of Benares

Songs of Benares, the first event of Sangeet Millennium's 2019 series "South Asian Music for the World," a performance of North Indian classical music showcasing the simultaneously earthy and spiritual style hailing from the ancient city of Benares, The concert features acclaimed vocalist Rupan Samanta on tour from Dehradun, India, with backup vocals and instrumental interpretations of the repertoire by Dr. Amie on sitar.

Both artists are longtime disciples of the same legendary Hindustani vocal diva and guru, the late Padma Vibhushan Girija Devi of Benares, from whom they learned this repertoire. The concert also pays tribute to Girija Devi on her 90th birth anniversary. Uddalak Samanta, also on tour from India, will accompany on tabla.
