Inspired by Lord Byron’s “dramatic poem,” Tchaikovsky’s brooding Manfred Symphony portrays the solitary hero searching for peace and redemption. Through a rich orchestral palette, the audience enters the world of spirits — good ones with lustrous strings and demonic ones with a shattering Dies irae. Organ phenom Cameron Carpenter shows off the Lay Family Concert Organ with Jongen’s tour de force, requiring, as one commentator says, a soloist with “brawn, stamina and grace.”
