Do you know how to spell the word “flummoxed”? How about “bamboozled”? Wheelhouse is giving Dallas wordsmiths the chance to showcase their talents with theBoozy Bee, a five-week, late-night, adults-only spelling bee held every Friday in May from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Relive your third-grade spelling bee glory days (only now you can drink!) and win fun prizes while you’re at it. Spellers can ask for definitions, languages of origin, parts of speech, alternate pronunciations and a sentence using the word. Competitors can expect silly and crass commentary from competition host Isaac Young, a local actor, writer and clown, and mistress of ceremonies and keeper of the book Michelle Padgett, editor of The Joule’s online and print publication 1530 Main.
The last speller standing each night will receive a $100 gift card toward their bar tab that night. The top three finishers each week will advance to the championship finals on May 31 for a chance to win a private beer dinner for six at Wheelhouse (valued at $500)and the taste of sweet victory.
Audience members can also get into the action by completing a social media stunt to earn their favorite speller a chance to “phone a friend,” “ask the audience,” or “cut the word” (discard and replace the word in play). So bring out your support crew and sharpen your spelling skills.
Each night will be limited to 20 spellers, with at least five spots available for walk-ups. To pre-reserve a spot email [email protected]with your name and preferred date: May 3, 10, 17 or 24. Wheelhouse is located at 1617 Hi Line Drive in the Decorative Center at the corner of Oak Lawn and Hi Line Drive.
