Scott Winterrowd: Space

Ro2 Art in The Cedars

Ro2 Art is proud to present Space, a solo exhibition featuring new works by artist Scott Winterrowd. The show will run from March 23 through April 20, 2019. There will be an opening reception held Saturday, March 23, from 7-10pm at the Ro2 Art in the Cedars located at 1501 S Ervay St. Dallas, TX 75215.

Scott Winterrowd’s solo exhibition Space, is a sublime depiction of the immense open spaces of National Parks. In over ten years of painting the Big Bend region, the works exhibited demonstrate how each visit has been a vastly different experience, even when painting at the same locations. Winterrowd’s encounters witnessing the total solar eclipse in the southwest are also included in these works. Capturing acute changes in landscapes when viewed day to night and at different seasons of the year, the artist engages in the daunting task of framing an immeasurable and diverse landscape. Referencing the pathways to place and reflecting on his work over time by including postcard paintings, Scott Winterrowd uses layered watercolor to capture the complexities of mountains, trees, hills, and skies of southwest America.

Artist Statement

Most of the works in this show were created in the last two years, but as 2018 marked the tenth year that I have been painting in the Big Bend region, there are a few older works exhibited that show my return to subjects and places over time. Each visit to Big Bend is a different experience, even when painting at the same locations. A few works have been brought in to demonstrate how the landscape changes when viewed by day or night, and at different times of year. The works shown here are an exploration of the vast open spaces of our National Parks, including the Big Bend and southern Utah.

The title of the show, Space, is about the daunting task of framing the expansive western landscape, but also about my interest in the night sky and solar phenomena. In August of 2017, I traveled through the south to witness the total solar eclipse. The works included here of that event were made in the following 24 hours after witnessing the passing of the moon in front of the sun. As always, my works reference the pathways to place through the inclusion of large letter postcard paintings. These reflect back to my work over time, and represent my travels on the pathways to the sublime landscapes of the southwest.
