CARMEN MENZA
UNFOLDING THE SUN
March 30 - June 8, 2019
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 30, 2019 from 5:00-8:30pm
Carneal Simmons Contemporary Art is pleased to present Unfolding the Sun, a solo exhibition of works by Carmen Menza. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.
Carmen Menza’s work explores the hypnotic and meditative quality of light by molding its essence into a tangible, sculptural form. Using reflection, refraction and dispersion her wall sculptures and installation art invite shared, communal experiences that stimulate our natural curiosity in this ethereal medium. Unfolding the Sun seeks to traverse this commonality and broaden Menza’s personal language of light.
Carmen Menza is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans video, light sculpture, music and public art installations, focusing on generative visuals and sound. Her films have screened at the Dallas International Film Festival, Experiments in Cinema Festival, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dallas Aurora, Dallas VideoFest and on PBS/ KERA. Her software-based light work is part of the permanent collection at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary
Museum in Dallas and she has exhibited with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s Soluna Festival, Dallas Aurora Light Festival, The Women’s Museum (Dallas), The Museum of Geometric and MADI Art (Dallas), and The Perot Museum of Nature and Science (Dallas).
