TCU Ballet Residency, feat. Debra Austin

Texas Christian University - The School for Classical & Contemporary Dance

The TCU School for Classical & Contemporary Dance invites you to experience world-renowned American ballerina Debra Austin for a ballet residency encompassing master classes, community events, Q&A forums, and cross-departmental workshops. Austin will welcome TCU students and community members April 14-18 as she shares her dance expertise and groundbreaking career experiences. Central to this visit to TCU, Austin will discuss American ballet history and re-invigorating diversity and inclusion into the classical ballet field of America.

Austin’s extensive career in classical, neo-classical and contemporary ballet has earned her several firsts. She became the first African American New York City Ballet member at just 16 years old, touring the world with the company nine years.  She then joined the Zurich Ballet in Switzerland before returning to the States and becoming the first African American Principal Dancer in a major American ballet company, the Pennsylvania Ballet. For the last 18 years she has served as Ballet Master for Carolina Ballet.
