Late Nights: Keir Collection of Islamic Art

Explore the Keir Collection of Islamic Art with contemporary artists, filmmakers, curators, and musicians who are responding to, or inspired by, traditional Islamic art and culture.

Program Highlights:

Opening Performance featuring the Sangeet Millennium Ensemble
6:00–7:00 p.m., Atrium
Start your evening with Sufi-inspired music performed by Sangeet Millennium Ensemble featuring Dr. Amie Maciszewski on sitar, Shantanu Bhattacharya on tabla, with vocals by Chittaranjan Mohan Gupta, and Mrigayu Ghosh on tanpura.

Pop-Up Art Spot
7:00–9:30 p.m., Level 1, Keir Collection
Looking for a hands-on experience in the DMA galleries? Visit the Pop-Up Art Spot and experience art in a new way. Learn how the repetition and overlapping of simple shapes create intricate designs and patterns. Explore the cross-cultural connections in works of art from the Keir Collection and participate in a cultural exchange project with other visitors.

Artist Talk: Soody Sharifi
7:30 p.m., Horchow Auditorium
Soody Sharifi is an American-Iranian artist who works with photography, painting, and collage to explore the experience of living between two distinct cultures. Join Sharifi for a talk about her painting "Courtly Love," recently acquired by the Museum.

Late Night Main Stage featuring Ehsan Matoori
8:00–8:45 p.m., Atrium
Listen to world music performed by Ehsan Matoori and musicians from the AramArt World Music & Art Institute. Matoori was born in Iran and at the age of 9 he began learning the santoor based on Maestro Faramarz Payvar’s method. AramArt is a cultural, educational, and entertainment center that offers a variety of services to the enthusiastic children and adults in the DFW area.

Artist Demo featuring Elinor Aishah Holland
8:00–10:00 p.m., Tech Lab, Center for Creative Connections
Drop by the Tech Lab to meet calligrapher Elinor Aishah Holland and watch her create intricate works of art composed of Arabic script. At 8:30 p.m. Holland will give a brief artist talk about her work and the rich cultural history of Arabic calligraphy.

Calligrapher Elinor Aishah Holland will talk about the history and artistry of Arabic calligraphy with examples of her own work. After the talk, visit the Keir Collection of Islamic Art to see more of this centuries-old artform.

Late Night Film: Kedi
8:30 p.m., C3 Theater
In the surprise box-office smash "Kedi," director Ceyda Torun returns to her native Istanbul to capture her hometown from the perspective of seven of the city’s hundreds of thousands of stray cats. Torun crafts an infectious portrait full of charm and sweetness, at once a love letter to the regal animal and to the ancient city itself. This film is not rated (2017, 79 minutes).

Late Night Talk: Contemporary Muslim Fashion
9:30 p.m., Horchow Auditorium
Join Jill D’Alessandro, Curator in Charge of Costume and Textile Arts at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, for a talk about Muslim fashions past and present and the intersections of cutting-edge contemporary design and modest dress.

Late Night After Hours Showcase featuring Antar’s Band
10:00–10:45 p.m., Atrium
End your evening with a special joyful performance of Arabic music, including instrumental and sung classic and modern pieces performed by Antar’s Band, featuring brothers Basheer on the oud and Mosheer on the keyboard and oud. The oud is a short-necked lute commonly used in Middle-Eastern music and it is one of the oldest stringed instruments in the world.

Spotlight Tour: Islamic Art at the DMA
10:30 p.m., Meet at the main Visitor Services Desk
Join DMA Curator of Islamic and Medieval Art Heather Ecker for a fun tour of the Keir Collection of Islamic Art. Tour is limited to the first 25 attendees. Visit the Will Call Desk on Level 1 at 10:15 p.m. to reserve your spot.
