A Cambodian genocide survivor, Loung Ung is the subject of the acclaimed film First They Killed My Father. The film is based on her memoir and directed by Angelina Jolie. From 1975 — 1979, the Khmer Rouge systematically murdered an estimated two million Cambodians, almost a fourth of the country’s population. Ung narrowly escaped the genocide with her brother and sister-in-law. Her parents, two sisters, and twenty other relatives were killed.
