Sammons Jazz: Swinging Sticks

Sammons Center for the Arts

Sammons Jazz kicks off its 30 th anniversary with two sets of different sticks. The classic sound of jazz clarinet takes center stage when clarinetist/saxophonist Chris McGuire and his swinging band pay tribute to legends like Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and Sidney Bechet. Chris is joined by Andrew Griffith on drums, Peter Rioux on piano, and Jonathan Fisher on bass.

What happens when two smooth drummers hold a drum off? Find out when Andrew Griffith and Jaelun Washington join forces in a set reminiscent of the drum battles mounted by Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Art Blakey, and Buddy Rich. Also on stage are Fredrick Sanders on piano, Carl Hillman on bass, Dave Monsch on sax, and Pete Clagett on trumpet.

Sammons Jazz is held at the Sammons Center for the Arts, 3630 Harry Hines at Oak Lawn. Tickets are $50 per person and include beverages, a light meal, and valet parking. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; the concert begins approximately at 7:30 p.m. There are two performance sets of about 40 minutes each with an intermission between. Dress is casual.
