Participants will learn how to make an organic indigo vat from scratch using indigo, fructose, and lime. Titled the “sugar vat”, this indigo recipe produces beautiful blues on cotton and silk fibers. All participants will explore the ancient tradition of Shibori dyeing. Shibori is a Japanese term for several methods of dyeing cloth with a pattern by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, compressing, or capping. Some of these methods are known in the West as tie-dye. We will focus on clamping techniques on cotton and silk bandanas.
