Soundings: Orpheus Unsung

Nasher Sculpture Center

Describing the composition as a “wordless opera,” guitarist and composer Steven Mackey collaborated with percussionist Jason Treuting in this update on the story of Orpheus, Eurydice, and the mythological netherworld they explore. Carnegie Hall’s Lizzie Burns will be on double-bass for this partly instrumental, partly vocal performance, along with Sam Seyong Um, who has previously performed as a soloist with the Yale Philharmonic.

Orpheus Unsung will be accompanied by a rendition of Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina’s Galgenlieder, which is based on Christian Morgenstern’s Gallow’s Songs, an early 20th Century poetry cycle. Mezzo Soprano Melanie Henley Heyn will lead the selection. Heyn was previously seen and heard at the Nasher during the seventh season of Soundings for Scullhoff, Reich, and Wagner: Music from Yellow Barn. As with other performances in the series, current technology such as electronic looping will appear alongside more traditional instruments.
