Exhibition: The Ukrainian Genocide on 1932-1933

Dallas Public Library - J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, Fine Arts Division

Please join the Dallas Public Library and the North Texas Holodomor Committee on Sunday, September 23, at 2:00 PM as we commemorate the 85th Anniversary of the Holodomor: The Ukrainian Genocide of 1932-33 through an exhibit for public awareness.

The Holodomor was an artificial famine ordered by Russian Dictator, Joseph Stalin. He vowed to crush the Ukrainian resistance against Soviet collectivization by punishing ideas of freedom and controlling all farmland. All the grain that was harvested was sold beyond Ukraine’s borders or stored in locked containers to rot.

It is estimated that over 10 million lives were lost in just over a year.

For centuries Ukraine held the title of “The Breadbasket of Europe” due to its abundant resource of grains, so to be killed by the very substance that sustained life was devastating and is one of many reasons it compels us to raise awareness about The Holodomor.

Documentaries and film screenings on the Holodomor will be scheduled at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library on weekends for public viewing during the exhibit dates.

We are asking all visitors attending the commemoration on September 23rd to please bring canned goods that will be donated to the North Texas Food Bank. Hunger from poverty continues to be a serious issue in our community so let us remember the tragedy in Ukraine while helping others and together we will make a difference for the benefit of all.
