Holodomor - Ukrainian Genocide of 1932-33

Dallas Public Library - J. Erik Jonsson Central Library

The Dallas Public Library and the North Texas Holodomor Committee will commemorate the 85th Anniversary of the Holodomor: The Ukrainian Genocide of 1932-33 through an exhibit for public awareness. The exhibit will be featured at the J Erik Jonsson Central Library, Shirley Pollock Showcases on the 4th Floor located at 1515 Young Street in Dallas.

The HOLODOMOR, was an artificial famine ordered by Russian Dictator, Joseph Stalin who vowed to crush the Ukrainian resistance against Soviet collectivization, punish ideas of freedom and control all farmland.  All grain was ordered sold beyond Ukraine’s borders or stored in locked containers to rot and anyone caught with even one grain of wheat was killed. Over 10 million men, women and children starved to death in a year and a half. For centuries Ukraine was titled “The Breadbasket of Europe” due to its abundant resource of grains, so to be killed by the very substance that sustained life was devastating and compels us to raise awareness about the Holodomor.

Documentaries and film screenings on the Holodomor will be scheduled at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library on weekends, during the exhibit dates from September 16th through November 9th, 2018. Viewers are asked to bring canned foods for donation to the North Texas Food Bank

A commemorative ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 23rd at 2 PM on the 4th Floor of the Dallas Central Library to remember the victims of the Holodomor.  Join dignitaries, media and the local Ukrainian community for a traditional and informative event.
