What are "Roadshow" movies? In the 1950's, as studios and theatre owners were reeling from the effect television was causing their business, the ROADSHOW was developed as a way to boost Box Office revenues and to enhance the overall moviegoing experience. Instead of a wide release of the most popular and prestigious titles, these films would be released in very few theatres nationwide, usually in one large capacity theatre per city. After several months (or sometimes years) these films would then move out to other, smaller screens in a city. The Roadshow experience was designed to make seeing the film an event. It borrowed traditions from the opera and from theatre. A fancy color printed program would be distributed to ticket holders. Before the film started, the lights would dim and an Overture would play. There would be an Intermission followed by the Entr'acte which would introduce the second half of the film. At the end, when the house lights came on, music from the film would still be playing as the audience left the auditorium.
