This week, Kids In The Cliff storytime at The Wild Detectives says Vive la France in a tip of the hat to some of the early settlers of Oak Cliff and as a welcome to visitors ever since.
Learn a little of the language or just enjoy the stories in this French-English bilingual storytime. We’ll start off easy with the graphically gorgeous bilingual board book edition of Les Misérables, adapted by Jennifer Adams. Next we will read Madeline And The Old House In Paris, a 2013 book en English by John Bemelmans Marciano, the grandson of the original Madeline author Ludwig Bemelmans. We’ll also read a selection from Sesyle Joslyn and John Alcorn’s spectacularly illustrated La Petite Famille, and one of the bewilderingly beautiful children’s stories translated into English in Stories 1-2-3-4, by the French Absurdist Eugene Ionesco. If the crowd is game, we can finish with Dr. Seuss’ Les Oeufs Verts Au Jambon – no translation necessary! We will sing and learn a little French, but mostly have a lovely time ensemble.
Note: If you are looking for excellent contemporary French picturebooks, though nearly wordless, the works of graphic artist Blexbolex cannot be highly enough recommended!
Kids In The Cliff is organized by Lanie DeLay, who has worked at Dallas Contemporary, the Dallas Public Library, Hamon Arts Library at SMU, at area preschools and the School For The Blind in Austin. She has written for Glasstire and Art&Seek, and she tutors children in early reading skills at Dealey Montessori. When she isn’t looking at art or reading with kids, she’s reading about art or looking for a new read.
It’ll be about a 45 minute read with a great opportunity for the kids–that’s going to be interesting, we can’t wait to see what they come up with.
