Elysian Aftertaste

Ro2 Art is proud to present Elysian Aftertaste, a solo exhibition featuring new works by artist Nathan Porterfield. The show will run from June 9 through July 7, 2018. There will be an opening reception held Saturday, June 9, from 7-10 pm at the Ro2 Art Downtown Pop-Up located at 1508 Commerce Street in downtown Dallas.

Nathan Porterfield uses accessible, common materials such as corrugated cardboard, zip ties, and broom bristles to explore the complex role of the individual in today’s culture. Porterfield refers to the abstracted characters in his work as “Units of Resistance;” while each unit is given the opportunity to express its perspectives, sensibilities, and convictions, it is also an active contributor to a system far greater than itself. Elysian Aftertaste is an exhibition comprised of works that express personal individuality and a homogeneous spirit; an homage to those who have stood for change, and therein been the backbone of progress.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Nathan Porterfield is an artist native to Clarksville, Texas. He received his BFA with emphasis in printmaking from The University of Texas at Tyler in 2004, and his MFA in printmaking from Texas Christian University in 2008. Nathan currently resides in Arlington, Texas and is an adjunct art professor at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas.

Elysian Aftertaste is: feeling the full effect of becoming; being material; moments as constitution

“My use of disparate constituent materials reflects the importance of the part/whole relationship in my work. I am moved by acknowledgment of systems and constructs, conscious and unconscious, and on every level; how we form understanding of self as a system, and of self, within larger systems. Materials are married to become objects, objects become images, images become a part of a language, and this language, perception. Every part of my experience is in the work, in recognition of myself as part of a whole, and my moments as my constitution.”
