East Meets West: Chinese Painting and Spontaneous Watercolor Workshop


In this four-day workshop, students will learn to use Chinese brushes, inks and colors as well as new techniques to create “spontaneous style” Chinese paintings. Instructor Lian Quan Zhen will teach the theory of Asian art; basic techniques, including composition and coloring; and unique methods for color pouring and blending; and negative painting.

Lian Quan Zhen is a much-sought-after watercolor and Chinese-painting instructor throughout the U.S. and abroad. He began sketching and painting while practicing medicine in China. After immigrating to the U.S., he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California-Berkeley and then a Master of Architecture degree from MIT. He has taught all over the world and has been an invited juror for art competitions throughout the country. His work has been featured in many art magazines, and he is the author of numerous books on watercolor techniques.
