My father was diagnosed with cancer. I went to my hometown to help him out around the house. It's the house where my sisters and I grew up. I decided to clean out the storage shed while I was there. I found many things in the shed that dated back to my childhood. These objects provoked intense nostalgia, reminding me of events and rituals that helped bind my family together. Family events, road trip vacations, and a happy childhood are etched into my psyche. Our house and furnishings were modest but important and meaningful events took place in and around our home with these items.
Unnatural Totems is an attempt to combine my memories with the found objects and create a visual record of some joyful familial rituals. In some of the works, the totems are a reflection of the spirit of a time that coincided with these childhood memories.
