Grammy Award-winning producer Marty Ashby’s fascinating music documentary chronicles the unrecognized history of jazz music in Pittsburgh, PA. The Steel City produced such international jazz legends as George Benson, Ahmad Jamal, Stanley Turrentine, Billy Eckstine, Kenny Clark, Art Blakey, Billy Strayhorn and Mary Lou Williams. Using archival footage and photos, the one-hour film sheds light on the social conditions and historical events that conspired to make Pittsburgh one of the world’s leading contributors to the legacy of jazz music.
A Q&A with Ashby and moderator Cameron Smith follows the screening. The event, co-presented by USA Film Festival, Dallas Jazz Appreciation Month (D’JAM), and Sammons Jazz, moves to the Sammons Center for the Arts, 3630 Harry Hines Blvd., for a free public reception with Ashby.
