The Art of Collecting

Collector House Art Consulting, CYDONIA Gallery, and Kirk Hopper Fine Art are pleased to announce a panel discussion entitled The Art of Collecting. The event will be focused on the art eco- system, the mechanics of an art gallery, and how visitors can engage and support artists of our time. The panel will be moderated by Hady Mawajdeh, Arts Reporter / Digital Editor of KERA’s Art and Seek, on Saturday, May 5 from 2 - 4 at Kirk Hopper Fine Art, located at 3008 Commerce Street, Dallas 75226.

Panelists include CYDONIA Director Hanh Ho, Collector House Proprietor Jennifer Klos, and KHFA Assistant Director / Artist Giovanni Valderas. Dallas has a wealth of museums, artists, and arts programming. How are these interrelated? The goal of the event is to provide an educational, inclusive, transparent foundation for viewers that encourages them to participate in contemporary art programming.

Hady Mawajdeh is an Arts Reporter and Digital Editor for KERA’s Art & Seek. Hady came to KERA from Austin where worked on the national daily news show of Texas,”Texas Standard." At the Standard, Hady crafted stories and segments about the topics and headlines that mattered most to Texans. Prior to his work on the Standard, Hady lived and worked in Durham, North Carolina, where he worked as producer at North Carolina Public Radio – WUNC. At WUNC he was able to work on the statewide news program "The State of Things." Hady’s journalistic career began during college as an intern and freelance reporter at NPR affiliate KUT 90.5 FM Austin. Hady was born and raised in Central Texas and attended college at Texas State University. Hady is obsessed with pop culture, music, photography and...ART! CYDONIA opened in September 2014 with a curated exhibition and catalogue entitled Ex- Y: Representations of Contemporary Masculinity, featuring 9 different artists whom explored masculinity after all three waves of feminism. Since its inception, CYDONIA has received critical praise from numerous press outlets, both local and international. The Dallas Observer noted: "[T]he perfect combination of education and eye candy can be found at Cydonia Gallery. This commercial space features a roster of international artists, all of whom show potential to rise to art-stardom. Gallerist Hanh Ho has a keen eye for talent, offering numerous artists their first exhibitions in the United States.” CYDONIA is a pioneer, having been the first gallery in the metroplex to exhibit in art fairs in Berlin and Toronto and among a select number of Texas galleries to exhibit in Mexico City and Seattle. Born and raised in Dallas, Ho earned an MFA in Curating from Goldsmiths College in London. She holds a BA in Art and Art History from Vanderbilt University along with an MBA from the University of Dallas. Based in Dallas, Texas, art advisor Jennifer Klos assists private collectors in the acquisition of fine and decorative arts, specializing in modern and contemporary art. As President of Collector House Inc., Jennifer enjoys sharing her curatorial eye, knowledge and expertise of the art world with clients in a fun and accessible manner. During her eight-year tenure as Curator at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, she organized national and international exhibitions, expanding the presentation of decorative arts and design, and contemporary art installations. Jennifer earned her master’s degree in the history of decorative arts, design, and culture from the Bard Graduate Center in New York and her bachelor’s degree in Art History and French from Vanderbilt University. She is a graduate of the Inchbald School of Design, London and Christie’s Education, London. As an independent curator and art historian, she regularly lectures on the topics of art collecting, design history, and English country houses. Jennifer is a board member of the American Friends of Attingham, a scholarly organization devoted to the study of English country houses and collections, and a member of the Association of Art Museum Curators, The Decorative Arts Trust and the Costume Society of America. A native of Dallas, Giovanni Valderas is the Assistant Gallery Director at Kirk Hopper Fine Art. He also served as an appointee by Dallas City Council as Vice Chair of the Cultural Affairs Commission. Previously he was the Gallery Director at Mountain View College. Valderas graduated from the College of Visual Arts & Design at the University of North Texas with a Master of Fine Arts in Drawing & Painting. He has taught several painting and drawing courses at the University of North Texas, Richland, and Mountain View College. He is a former member of 500x gallery, one of the oldest co-op galleries in Texas. In addition, Valderas recently received a micro-grant from the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas for his guerrilla site-specific project. Most recently, Valderas was reappointed to the City of Dallas, Cultural Affairs Commission to serve under Councilman Omar Narvaez.
