The exhibition "James Surls: Through the Thorn Tree" is on view at the Museum of Biblical Art through April 28, 2018. Fifty-two sculptures and works on paper, spanning forty years of James’ career will be on exhibition.
The works of art in "James Surls: Through the Thorn Tree" set the context of Surls’ life. “The big question of the day is where do I stand as it relates to my time in this life. I can not abandon my history, which started in the early 1940's rural East Texas surrounded by church goers, deacons and believers with full intent to influence… anything having to do with spirituality, religion or the church is such a hot button issue in today’s world that I am drawn with force to speak my truth. I have nothing but personal truth to tell. We are in an existential crisis and I feel it is time to release the voices from my soul.”
