Outside In: In Conversation with Andy Don Emmons & Brian Green about Self-Taught Artists

For decades, the art world has struggled to create a label for untrained artists who create works of genius and are considered to be outsiders. But in 1982, a group of artists that make up what is now considered the American self-taught canon of “outsider art” were featured in the seminal exhibition “Black Folk Art in America” at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Since then, a growing number of “outsider,” “self-taught,” or “visionary” artists have been collected by large museums, prestigious galleries, and wealthy patrons. It now begs the questions: What does “outsider artist” really mean? And have all the outsider artists already been discovered?

Curator and artist Andy Don Emmons will discuss the latest discovery by antiques collector Brian Green of never-before-seen works from self-taught artist Joe Schwartzwald. Schwartzwald died in 2016 and left behind a limited body of work made from a fallen tree at his home in Irving, Texas. Join The Cedars Union for an intimate and lively conversation about the artist and the private exhibition of his work presented by Shotgun Artists Collective.

Space is limited. Email your RSVP to cgutierrez (@) cedarsunion.org.For more information about the exhibition, call Andy Don Emmons at (903) 390-3003.This program is co-organized by The Cedars Union and Shotgun Artists Collective.
