Brandon Gonzalez: Body Textures

Eastfield College

October 20 – November 30, 2017

Reception: October 20, 6:30 – 9:00 pm

(PERFORMANCE BEGINS AT 7:00 pm)

Brandon Gonzalez is an interdisciplinary artist that works between the fields of visual arts, choreography, and performance. His investigations of the body as a resource for creative practice led him to develop works across a variety of artistic mediums. His work is concerned with how political realities are intensely inscribed into our bodily gestures, actions, and perceptions.

In his multidisciplinary work, Body Textures, Gonzalez explores corporeal perceptions, physical performance, and video manipulation resulting in textures and tensions that unveil connectivity between the body and the space it inhabits. He views the body as a “sensing sculpture,” connected to the world, continually in flux and responding to change. Through the performing body, objects in his installation become supporting actors, blurring the border between flesh and thing.

Body Textures will be on display from October 20-November 30 at Eastfield College in the Performance Hall Lobby. Gonzalez will perform at the opening reception on Friday, October 20 at 7:00 pm in the Eastfield College Performance Hall.

Gonzalez’ work, acting on and with objects, recontextualizes our experience of objecthood. Calling forth French philosopher Gaston Bachelard’s ideas about space, “I should say: the house shelters day-dreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace” (Poetics of Space), Gonzalez explores our interconnectivity with the environment that impacts our daily lives. Particularly, the way in which we engage with activities that awaken our senses and soften our borders. Through his practice and immersive installations, Gonzalez creates intimate spaces that allow the viewer a cinematic “close-up” experience of the space. His tactile work alters the properties of objects, making them more active and engaged through a reciprocal experience with the body. Imagine moving through a performance where you can create your own experience and determine how the performance unfolds around you.

Currently working both in the U.S. and Europe, Brandon Gonzalez has presented at KOMPANIE OFFSPACE (Freiburg), Ateneum (Helsinki), WUK (Vienna), The Dallas Contemporary, Mexic-Arte Museum (Austin), Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art, SUNDAY RUN_UP (Stockholm), FemArt Festival (Kosovo), and Müszi (Budapest), Texas Dance Improvisation Festival, and CQ Magazine.  He holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts with a focus on Choreography, Performance, and Visual Art from the University of California at Davis.
