Moments, Martin Lam Nguyen Solo

University of Dallas (UD) - Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery

The Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery is honored to present Moments, a solo show by Martin Lam Nguyen. Please join us for either the opening reception on October 5, 6-8 p.m. or our closing reception November 3, 6-8 p.m. The exhibition runs through from October 5, to November 5, 2017.

A devoted priest, long serving educator, and accomplished artist, Nguyen brings the many parts of his life together in the studio. Meditation and prayer join the rhythmic stroke of intricate line work in drawings and lessons from a life marred by war mixed together with joyful religious service, like ink and water on paper, with the desire to teach and inspire.

Martin Lam Nguyen was born in Vietnam; he arrived in America as a refugee in 1979 and became a priest of the Congregation of the Holy Cross a decade later. He joined the art department of the University of Notre Dame in 1995 and continues there as Associate Professor of the Department of Art, Art History and Design.

Moments brings together three of Nguyen’s major multi-year projects; Mountain Waits, Lucie, and Painting the Social Network for the first time. Encompassing every inch of the gallery, in an impressive installation, thousands of cataloged moments are laid out in a grid format in each project. The result is abounding repetition and yet individuality, as each painted or drawn image, like the moments they depict, reads as unique and personal.

However, Nguyen’s work is less about him and more about us, the viewer, as he creates a space for us to contemplate the moments of our own lives while viewing his work in the present moment.
