SANTA FE ARTIST KATIE O’SULLIVAN CHALLENGES TRADITIONAL FIGURE PAINTING WITH FIERCE FEMININE SUBJECTS IN UPCOMING EXHIBITION
The Santa Fe artist’s latest body of work exudes feminine strength and unapologetic emotion through a primitive, abstract appropriation of figurative painting. O’Sullivan will debut her recent work for “Worthy of Our Desires, A Female Perspective,” this August at CINQ Gallery in the Dallas Design District. Her solo exhibition opens on Saturday, August 19th from 6 – 9 pm and will remain on display through September 14th.
The body of work presented in O’Sullivan’s upcoming exhibition at CINQ Gallery began in January 2017 and represents a phase that not only marked a shift in subject matter, but also in the artist’s palette. Her aforementioned androgynous imagery was presented in vibrant hues and patterns that matched the enchanting chaos of its abstracted shapes, which felt more creature than human. Her current acrylic and ink compositions have a black and white and dutone palette to place more emphasis on elemental forms. By returning to the figure, the artist pays homage to her original training in classical portraiture while maintaining a rebellious response to traditional techniques.
