Teen Workshop: Character Design and Narrative Illustrations

Crow Museum of Asian Art

Mylan Nguyen is a Dallas native of Vietnamese and Mexican descent. She studied Illustration in Los Angeles and ceramics in Japan and creates gallery and installation work in her own unique illustration style. Look and learn at the works of some of artist Mylan Nguyen’s favorite illustrators, Ako Castuera, Yumi Sakugawa, and Gerald Leung, and examine their approach to designing and creating compelling characters.

In this workshop, teens will get a chance to dream up and draw their own characters with the loose theme of “imaginary friendship.” Then, participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussions around narrative, personal illustration style, and what it means to create a voice that is unique to the characters that come from one’s own world. Pieces from this workshop will be used by the artist to create a sculptural, interactive installation that will be displayed alongside participant work in a community exhibition.

This workshop is for ages 13 - 18 only. From 2-5 p.m.
